Types of Mouthguards for MMA
Depending on the level of contact and protection needed, there are three main styles of mouthguard that are available, but not all are recommended for MMA and boxing.
Stock
Stock mouthguards are generic and not moulded to your mouth in any way. They usually come in adult and child sizes and offer little protection for the actions associated with MMA. For this reason, we do not recommend these mouthguards for boxing or MMA.
Boil and Bite
A step up from stock mouthguards, boil and bite mouthguards can be moulded to your teeth after being heated in hot water. They offer a decent level of protection and are suitable for many sports. However, for MMA and boxing we would not recommend them for anything outside of light sparring.
Custom Mouthguards
Custom mouthguards, as the name suggests, are made custom for your mouth. These mouthguards are made using an impression of your teeth and can be modified to provide the protection you need for any sport. They are the best option when choosing mouthguards for MMA and come with a range of benefits in the combat sport world.
Benefits of Custom Mouthguards for MMA
Protection
The primary purpose of a mouthguard is to protect your mouth. Custom mouthguards will provide you with the most protection and some serious shock absorption. Mouthguards for MMA are designed to protect against a variety of injuries such as fractured or knocked out teeth, fractures to your jaw, soft tissue damage to the tongue, gums and lips, and even nerve damage.
Size and Fit
The key difference between a custom mouthguard compared to other options is that the size and fit is tailored for your mouth. It is important to have mouthguards for boxing and MMA that have a snug fit and stay in your mouth with little effort. Getting a custom mouthguard properly fitted will also make it less likely that your speech or breathing is impeded.
Breathability
Custom mouthguards ensure breathability with varying thickness and materials used to accommodate your mouth. If you get an ill-fitting mouthguard, it may impact your breathing, limiting the amount of oxygen you can take in during activity. This can have consequences such as increased blood pressure, reduced performance, delayed recovery, and light headedness. All of these can impact your training and fighting.
Comfort
If you have all the benefits of a custom mouthguard but you can’t wear it because it isn’t comfortable then it is pointless. Comfort is the key to making a good mouthguard great, and this can be achieved by getting a professionally made custom mouthguard.
