Common Denture Myths

If you’re thinking you might need dentures, it’s understandable if you feel a little bit hesitant at the prospect – especially since what most people know about dentures can be gleamed from pop culture. But in reality, getting dentures is not as scary or as life altering as you may think. We debunk some of the common denture myths to give you some peace of mind.

Denture myths #1: You aren't old enough to have dentures

Though dentures are commonly used by the elderly, they’re designed to be worn by anyone with missing teeth – no matter the age. There are a multitude of reasons why people lose their teeth, ranging from illness and gum disease, to injuries from sports. In fact, plenty of young people require partial or full dentures and go by relatively unnoticed. No matter the reason, it’s important to replace missing teeth as soon as possible, if not to restore your mouth to its former functions but to prevent further problems such as oral infections, speech problems, headaches and shifting of teeth.

Denture myths #2: They will look fake

Gone are the days of the artificial looking dentures – now, modern dentures are completely undetectable from real teeth. Using the latest fabrication technology, dentures are designed to conform perfectly to a patient’s mouth for a seamless fit. This means that not only do they more realistic, but they’re far less likely to slip or shift. When made properly, dentures look just as natural as real teeth, and can be created to replicate your natural teeth as closely as possible – or you can go a few shades whiter for that perfect Hollywood smile!

Denture myths #3: Dentures fall out easily

When designed properly, dentures should not easily slip of shift. If you do think your dentures are feeling a little bit loose, it’s important to communicate this to your dental prosthetist so the appropriate changes can be made. If you’re wearing full dentures, you’ll likely have to replace them every few years as the bone in your jaw will shrink with time. You can get by using denture adhesive, but it’s recommended you have your dentures relined regularly. For additional security, consider getting dental implants or implant retained dentures instead. Implant retained dentures involve installing four dental implants into your gums and sliding the dentures onto a fixed plate. Not only does this help with your jawbone health, but it also adds an additional layer of security.

Denture myths #4: Eating with dentures is difficult

Though it does take some time to get used to dentures at first, you will become accustomed to them within a few weeks. You can expect a few sores and slight discomfort when eating in the initial stages, but your mouth will soon get used to having a foreign object in it. The process may feel a little bit slow at the time, but rest assured it does get better! It’s recommended you start with small quantities of soft foods for the first month or two, before working your way up to chewier meals.
