Foods to Avoid with Dentures

Dentures are a majorly beneficial and life changing solution for many people around the world, however, that doesn’t mean they don’t come with responsibility and the need for proper upkeep. It’s important to ensure you’re eating the correct foods and drinking the right drinks that keep your dentures intact and lasting longer. Remember, these are not permanent fixtures, as they are able to be removed from your mouth. Although there is a list, food denture wearers should avoid is not as extensive as you’d think.

If you’ve ever wondered what kind of foods to avoid with dentures, we’ve gathered a short and sweet list that should give you a good idea of what to avoid or minimise in your diet. For more information about denture care, read some of our other blogs!

Food Denture Wearers Should Avoid

Steak & Tough Meat

Steak and thick cuts of meat can oftentimes be rough on our teeth regardless, which means if you’re taking to them with dentures, you’re going to have more of a hard time chewing. Whether it’s a super tender cut that you can get through with a butter knife, it won’t make much of a difference, because dentures can become destabilised in your mouth and cause a lot of discomfort.

Sticky Candy & Food

We all know how annoying it can be when you’ve eaten a rather chewy or sticky candy and it takes forever to get out from between your teeth. Well, it’s even worse when it comes to wearing dentures – the last thing you’ll want to do is remove the dentures from your mouth and spend time prying the chewy pieces from between the teeth, not only that, but your dentures can become dislodged in your mouth from the pressure of chewing something so sticky.

Popcorn & Nuts

Thanks to the hard nature of an assortment of nuts, they’re typically chewed using the back of ones jaw where our teeth are the strongest. These are one of the more important foods to avoid with dentures as they can easily dislodge and loosen their position in your mouth, as food usually needs to be chewed evenly on both sides to prevent the dentures from popping out of place. Popcorn is another imperative type of food that can cause grief with dentures, as the kernels may become lodged between the dentures and your gums, causing irritation or even pain that is hard to deal with. Veggie chips are an alternative that people with dentures enjoy when they want to kill that salty craving.

Coffee, Tea & Red Wine

Most importantly, anything that can stain your teeth is a no-go. This includes teas, coffee, red wine, and even foods or spices (such as turmeric) that will leave your teeth looking discoloured. These sorts of things will stain our natural teeth no matter what as it is, and you usually have to pay a bit of money to have them cleaned or whitened. However, with dentures, cleaning off food or beverage stains isn’t going to be the same.
